REWIND: 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP FINAL

Would you believe me if I said this world cup was ten years ago on the 13th of July, well you probably wouldn't. In this blog were going to take a look at the matches that built up to Germanys 1-0 win over Argentina, Thanks to Mario Götze of course.


GERMANY

If  you ask me, Germany's 2014 world cup squad was one of the most dynamic and raw-talented teams we have seen in a good while, for one reason they had a team. That might not make sense but if you look at other teams, who have one or two good players you will see that they struggle, but when you look at Germany it had an entire roster of top tier players most of whom played together at club level.

Like I said quite a raw-talented squad if you ask me. 

Germanys first match in the group stage was against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal with the final score being 4-0 with goals from Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels, In Germanys second match they took on Ghana which ended in a 2-2 draw with a Goal from Mario Götze and Miroslav Klose. Germany's final match in the group stage was against the USA which ended in a 1-0 win with a goal from Thomas Muller. Germany's opponents in the round of 16 were Algeria, after 90 mins that game was tied 0-0, Andre Schürrle and Mesut Özil scored in extra time to end the match 2-1. They faced France in the quarter finals where they won 1-0 thanks to Mats Hummels header. Now in there Semi Final match they faced hosts Brazil and lets say the result was interesting to say the least.. It has been described as "a drama... that will never be forgotten by anyone who witnessed it", Germany crushed the hosts a mighty 7-1 with goals from Thomas Muller. Miroslav Klose. Toni Kroos, Sami Khedira [all before half time may I add] and then two from Andre Schürrle. This eventful match lead Germany to the final where they would face Argentina and cement there name in football history. 


ARGENTINA

When you look at Argentina now you will see the likes of Julian Alvarez, Lautaro Martinez, Alexis Mac Allister even Enzo Fernandes. But when we rewind back to 2014 we only had the generational talents of Lionel Messi, Sergio Agüero and Angel Di Maria even Javier Mascherano if were willing to push the boat out.

In Argentina's first match. they took on Bosnia and Herzegovina in they which won 2-1 thanks to an og and then a goal from Lionel Messi. Argentina's second match in the group stage was  against Iran in which they also won thanks another goal from Lionel Messi. In their final group stage match they took on Nigeria which ended 3-2 with goals from Lionel Messi and Marcos Rojo. Argentina's round of sixteen opponents were Switzerland and after extra time the score was 1-0 thanks to Angel Di Maria.  Argentina's quarter final match was against  Belgium and won 1-0 thanks to Higuain. Unlike Germany, there semi final match was.. calmer than the mighty 7-1. Argentina took on the Netherlands and even after 120 mins of normal time and extra time there still wasn't a goal but after penalties it was 4-2. After this Argentina would go on to face Germany and we all know what happened.

The match was kicked off by Germany at 4pm. 

There was many opportunity's for both sides to score throughout normal time but everything kicked off in extra time. Schürrle received a pass in front of the goal from Götze, but his close range shot was blocked by Romero. Messi and Agüero got a break up felid but was quickly stopped by Boateng. Five mins later a lob by Palacio went over Neuer but went just wide. In the second half of extra time Germany's Mario Götze scored in the 113th min to give Germany the only goal of the game. Götze controlled the ball on his chest and then volleyed the ball left footed into the net. Later in extra time Messi had an opportunity to score from a free but his attempt flew high over the crossbar.

THE AUSSIES EMERGE VICTORIOUS OVER PAKISTAN

 Australia beat Pakistan by 62 runs yesterday, which earns them there second win in the world cup which happens to move them up into fourth behind South Africa and ahead of New Zealand. The Aussies have started the world cup campaign by losing to India by 6 wickets and South Africa 134 runs. They redeemed themselves by beating Sri Lanka by 5 wickets and Pakistan by 62 runs. This is what Australia's captain, Pat Cummins had to say:  "That was great. Pretty tough playing here but good to get a win. Proper from the openers, it set the tone and we want to take the game on like that. The key in ODIs [one day internationals] is to carry on. You get on breakthrough and it looks tough for the next guy. Batting for long like our openers did, was great. Zampa has been awesome. Showed his class, he's a wicket taker . Babar and Iftikhar were big wickets. Were coming of two wins and have a three or four- day break before the next game. Can take a couple of days off, then get to work. ...
