England were finally put out of there misery following there 33 run defeat to the Australian side in Ahmedabad. Australia went into the game without two key players, Mitchell Marsh who flew back to Australia for personal reasons and Glenn Maxwell who was ruled out on the account of an concussion suffered when he feel of a golf buggy. After being asked by England to bat first, Australia's openers Travis Head (11) and David Warner (15) feel cheaply to Chris Woakes. Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschange came together to rebuild Australia's innings. Smith looked in excellent form but fell after 44 to Adil Rashid for the seventh time in ODI's. Filling in for Maxwell, Green (47) and Labuschange (71) put on 61 before the latter trapped lbw by the extra pace of Mark Wood. Just as Australia's inning looked like stalling, Marcus Stonis (35) - in the team for Marsh and Adam Zampa (29) added some late runs to take them to 286 - with Woakes the pick of England’s bowlers with 4 for 54.England’s chase began terribly. Jonny Bairstow's torrid World Cup continued as he was caught down the leg side first ball off Mitchell Starc. Joe Root (13) followed his fellow Yorkshireman back to the sheds as England were reduced to 19 for 2.Dawid Malan has been England’s standout performer with the bat at the World Cup, the competition has not been stiff, and he made 50 before picking out Head on the fence off Pat Cummins. Jos Buttler fell to the spin of Zampa, as England’s stock plan in recent years - rely on Ben Stokes - looked the option once again. After starting his campaign late due to injury, Stokes arrived in Ahmedabad badly out of form. He took time to get going, but found an ally in Moeen Ali and they threatened to rip the game from Australia’s grasp with a 63-run partnership. But when Stokes (64) and Ali (42) departed - both to the leg spin of Zampa - England’s task looked hopeless. David Willey (15) and Woakes (32) frayed Australian nerves with some crisp hitting, but Zampa put the gloss on a player-of-the-match performance (29 runs, three wickets, one catch) with a superb diving grab to remove the former as Australia claimed the win to move on to 10 points.
"The boys have played brilliantly. I feel like every game we have improved a little bit. I still don't think we played the complete game or have really closed out a game but it feels like it's all come together. "You've seen a marked improvement. Everyone's diving around, all muddy. All the boys want to be in the heat of things, so it's great."
